Freelance writer and editor

Nancy Dunham - Freelance Write and Editor

So this is where I get to tell you all you need to know about me.

I'm the best. Hire me!

I joke (not really).

Let's start again. Ok, my entire career has been in journalism if you don't count my brief stint in public relations when my husband was in graduate school and I was supporting us (Which believe me, I don't.. But that job was fabulous compared to the other "job" I had when he was in school. No, it wasn't illegal or immoral, but let's just not go there. Please...What we do for love, I tell you).

After a long career as a newspaper reporter, mainly for Gannett Newspapers, I became a writer, editor and then publisher for health care magazines. Honestly, though, I always thought of myself as a reporter. I really was a good editor, if you count national awards (some for me, some for the writers), circulation increases (taking one magazine into the black for the first time in its history) and sales of ancillary products (see, I can still speak the lingo).

One thing the editor gigs did was give me a new appreciation for touring musicians. You're so lucky to see the world, everyone used to tell me. That's very true and I'm grateful for the opportunities (and to the Pulitzer Committee. Oops, wrong address. Sorry). But about the third time I went to the Far East during one six-month period, the intrigue had definitely dulled.

So what did I do to spice it up? Well, took any extra time I had in ye olde foreign lands to write entertainment and travel pieces for freelance clients (for some reason, physicians really didn't want to read CD reviews. Go figure). And the more I wrote, the more connected I became to my first love.

Yup, quit my managing editor job, took a part-time gig at US News & World Report (yeah, I was freaked the freelance assignments would all dry up as soon as I made the move. And wrote. And wrote. And wrote. And soon I found that I was turning down major assignments because they conflicted with US News & World Report. So I went full-time freelance (which likely was a relief to the good folks at the magazine who had to lay off staff. My departure meant one less ax would fall).

So for more than five years I've been a full-time freelance music journalist (and I write about automobiles too -- actually for "Automobile" occasionally and other great place such as National Automobile Dealers Association as often as I can, as a hobby. Hey, journalists are weird.).

The best part -- finding out how the music is created. Oh, and choosing my assignments (not to mention clients). The worst part -- I do miss my newsroom colleagues. Ok, some more than others but still.

So it's your turn now. Go to the radio button marked 'Contact' and tell me about you!

Don't want to be that up-close-and-personal yet? No problem. I understand commitment issues. Follow me on Twitter at NancyDWrites.
